Colorado author & Bubonicon friend Carrie Vaughn will be in Albuquerque on April 6 to celebrate the release of her 11th Kitty Norville novel, Kitty Rocks the House, with a presentation and signing.

Paranormal authors – and Bubonicon participants – Darynda Jones & Gabi Stevens are joined by local romance authors Katie Lane and Celeste Bradley for a “Spring Fling into Romance” mass discussion and signing March 9 at Page One Bookstore.

Janet Brennan Croft, consultant on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, talks on “Tolkien’s Faërian Drama: Origins and Valedictions” on Thursday, February 14, at the University Honors Forum at the University of New Mexico.

In “On Fairy-stories,” Tolkien introduces the concept of Faërian drama: plays which the elves present to men, where the viewer feels he is “bodily inside its Secondary World” but instead is “in a dream that some other mind is weaving.” Faërian drama is a form of Elvish art one can almost but not quite grasp and understand, something the witness/participant will ponder and work through for the rest of his life. Croft will suggest that Tolkien may have been influenced in his development of the concept by the medieval dream-vision poems he worked with throughout his career. She will examine some examples of Faërian drama in Tolkien’s fiction and poetry, concentrating especially on his final story, Smith of Wootton Major, and the experiences Smith has in Faery.

Croft speaks 7:30 pm Thursday, February 14, in Room 21 (Ground Floor) of the Student Health Center Building on the UNM campus (behind Johnson Gym and the multi-floor parking garage). The lecture is free and open to the public.

David Peterson, professional language creator on HBO’s Game of Thrones and SyFy’s Defiance, will talk about his TV work and discuss languages on Thursday, February 14.

In the space of one year, David Peterson went from being a “full-time” language creator to being a full-time language creator. After spending much of 2009-2011 happily working on Dothraki in spare moments and translating dialogue for HBO’s Game of Thrones when the need arose, in 2012 David found himself actually doing language creation as a full-time job, as opposed to a part-time job/part-time hobby. In this talk, David will share what it’s like to work as a full-time language creator, focusing on his work with Game of Thrones and SyFy’s Defiance (premiering in April). Along the way, he will discuss language, font design, travel, the importance of memory foam beds, and the state of the Dothraki language.

Peterson appears 6:30 pm Thursday, February 14, in Grand Pavilion V of the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque, 330 Tijeras Ave NW. The evening is presented by the Southwest/Texas Popular & American Culture Association.

Jane Espenson, writer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, and savvy writer/producer Brad Bell will host a conversation with scholars and educators about Husbands, their webseries show on Wednesday, February 13.

The evening also will cover the show’s agenda, its transmedia narrative strategies and production, and its outreach potential. The evening will be moderated by Dr. Anne Jamison (University of Utah), with whom Espenson and Bell collaborated on an outreach project to benefit LGBTQ homeless youth in Salt Lake City. The discussion will also feature a screening of a half-hour story from the series, footage from the Salt Lake City event, and clips of students engaging Husbands in the critical theory classroom.
