ACE 3 Finishes Three Days of Comic & Media Fun!

The 3rd Albuq Comic Expo starts its three-day run at the Albuquerque Convention Center, downtown. Guests such as Giancarlo Esposito, Neal Adams, Nicholas Brendon, Billy West, Aaron Campbell, Andy Kuhn, Katie Cook, Sean Becker, Melinda Snodgrass, Steven Gould, Matt Frank, Michael A. Stackpole, Robert Vardeman, Scott Phillips, Walter Jon Williams, Victor Milan, Joseph Gatt, John Jos. Miller, S.M. Stirling, Mike Baron, Phil Hester and many more.

The show floor will be open 2-8 pm Friday, 10 am-7 pm Saturday, and 10 am-6 pm Sunday. A three-day pass is approximately $45.00 at the door, with dailies at $20.00 per day.

Director Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner) solemnly alerts us to the glory that was Spinal Tap in his introduction to this “rockumentary” about the legendary British heavy-metal group, featuring lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), lead singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and a succession of drummers whose careers were cut short by spontaneously combusting on their stool, drowning in somebody else’s vomit, or otherwise perishing in untimely fashion. Under DiBergi’s studious interrogation, the band and their familiars retrace the band’s evolution from head-bopping Mersey Beat poseurs to head-banging metal poseurs, each change in musical direction or tonsorial chic having little effect on the surviving trio’s sublime idiocy. For, as St. Hubbins (he’s the “deep” one, relatively speaking) sagely observes, “It’s such a fine line between stupid and clever.”

Maybe the funniest, and most truthful, look at rock culture ever filmed and a personal best for all involved!

James S.A. Corey, which is the writing team of Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank, will be celebrating the release of their new space opera novel, Abaddon’s Gate – the 3rd book in the Expanse series – on Saturday, July 6, at Page One Bookstore.  They also will be letting attendees know about their Locus Award nomination for the 2nd Expanse book (and whether they win the coveted award in Seattle the weekend before).

THE 1987 INFAMOUS CLASSIC ON 35mm FILM!

Writer-director Sam Raimi’s extremely stylized, blood-soaked follow-up to his creepy Evil Dead – a hilarious, sophisticated slapstick send-up of the terror genre. Raimi takes every horror convention that exists and exaggerates it with mind-blowing special effects, crossed with mocking Three Stooges humor. The plot alone is right out of any number of horror films.

Several teens (including our hero, Ash, played by Bruce Campbell in a manic tour-de-force of physical comedy) visit a broken-down cottage in the woods–miles from civilization–find a copy of the Book of the Dead, and unleash supernatural powers that gut every character in sight. All, that is, except Ash, who takes this very personally and spends much of the of the film getting his head smashed while battling the unseen forces.

Raimi uses this bare-bones story as a stage to showcase dazzling special effects and eye-popping visuals, including some of the most spectacular point-of-view Steadicam work ever (done by Peter Deming). Although it went unnoticed in the theaters, the film has since become an influential cult-video favorite, paving the way for over-the-top comic gross-out films like Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive.

Calvin & Hobbes dominated the Sunday comics in thousands of newspapers for over 10 years, having a profound effect on millions of readers across the globe.  When the strip’s creator, Bill Watterson, retired the strip on New Year’s Eve in 1995, devoted readers everywhere felt the void left by the departure of Calvin, Hobbes and Watterson’s other cast of characters – and many fans would never find a satisfactory replacement.

It has now been more than a decade since the end of the Calvin & Hobbes era.  Bill Watterson has kept an extremely low profile during this time, living a very private life outside of Cleveland, Ohio.  Despite his quiet lifestyle, Mr. Watterson is remembered and appreciated daily by fans who still enjoy his amazing collection of work.

Mr. Watterson has inspired and influenced millions of people through Calvin & Hobbes.  Newspaper readership and book sales can be tracked and recorded, but the human impact he has had and the value of his art are perhaps impossible to measure.

This film is not a quest to find Bill Watterson, or to invade his privacy.  It is an exploration to discover why his ‘simple’ comic strip made such an impact on so many readers in the 80s and 90s, and why it still means so much to us today.

Santa Fe author & Bubonicon friend Ian Tregillis will be in Albuquerque on June 1 to celebrate the release of his 3rd Milkweed Triptych novel, Necessary Evil, with a presentation/reading and signing.

The latest “Nazi X-Men vs British Warlocks” adventure is described as such: “12 May 1940. Westminster, London, England:  the early days of World War II.  Again.  Raybould Marsh, one of ‘our’ Britain’s best spies, has travelled to another Earth in a desperate attempt to save at least one timeline from the Cthulhu-like monsters who have been observing our species from space and have already destroyed Marsh’s timeline. In order to accomplish this, he must remove all traces of the supermen that were created by the Nazi war machine and caused the specters from outer space to notice our planet in the first place. His biggest challenge is the mad seer Greta, one of the most powerful of the Nazi creations, who has sent a version of herself to this timeline to thwart Marsh.”
