Silent Night – a 2021 British black comedy – at the Guild Cinema
Friday-Monday, December 3-6 – 4:30 & 8:30 pm
Directed by Camille Griffin – 2021 -90m.
An all-star pitch-black comedy as only the UK can do. Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey), Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), Lily Rose-Depp, Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London), and Lucy Punch fill out a top-tier cast.
At a cozy house in the English countryside, everything’s ready for the holidays. The tree is decorated, a feast is prepared, and friends and family are streaming in. It’s perfect, except for one thing: everyone’s going to die. A poisonous cloud is slowly descending on the UK, and with no escape possible everyone’s gathered for one last celebration followed by a pill that will give them a nice, quiet death.
But even in the face of extinction, a family dinner is still a family dinner, and disagreements will erupt, secrets revealed, and hilarity will ensue.
“Run, don’t walk to catch Camille Griffin’s tragi-comic Christmas dinner feast, Silent Night, with Jojo Rabbit’s Roman Griffin Davis before the world ends. The youngster offers up one of the best performances of the year.” – Brandon Judell, Brandon Judell (Medium)
“An enjoyable film and marks the entrance of an exciting filmmaker to watch. The gallows humour and emotional heart are balanced nicely, creating a well rounded film that under normal circumstances, would be a delight for all.” – Rachel Ho, That Shelf
“With a stunningly honest performance from the director’s son — Jojo Rabbit star Roman Griffin Davis — Silent Night balances the eccentricities of a Christmas get-together with nihilistic acceptance of certain doom.” – Siddhant Adlakha, IGN Movies
“One cozy holiday unravels into something far more horrifying and unexpected. When the comedy seems to spin its wheels and stall, Griffin sucker punches her audience the moment she pulls back the curtain, recontextualizing everything that came before.” – Megan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting
