HAPPY NEW YEAR!  LET’S END IT & START IT WITH JOHN GOODMAN!

Music icon David Byrne was inspired by tabloid headlines to make his sole foray into feature-film directing, an ode to the extraordinariness of ordinary American life and a distillation of what was in his own idiosyncratic mind.  The Talking Heads front man plays a visitor to Virgil, TX, who introduces us to the citizens of the town during preparations for its Celebration of Specialness.  As shot by cinematographer Ed Lachman, Texas becomes a hyperrealistic late-capitalist landscape of endless vistas, shopping malls, and prefab metal buildings.  In True Stories, Byrne uses his songs to stitch together pop iconography, voodoo rituals, and a singular variety show—all in the service of uncovering the rich mysteries that lurk under the surface of everyday experience.

“An exuberant and wonderfully oddball stew of deadpan comedy, character drama, music video, and art installation.” – Jason Bailey, Flavorwire

“What makes True Stories so wildly different from the dream-visions of all the quirky and hip directors who followed its example is its vehement refusal to condescend to or mock the people on screen.” – Sydney Wegner, Film Freak Central

Raising Arizona – directed by Joel Coen – 1987 – 94m – No Matinees.   Part of the Guild’s “Double Feature Special” Celebration!

Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter and John Goodman lead an all-star cast in Ethan and Joel Coen’s celebrated comedy.  Once he decides to give up crime, a small-time robber (Cage) proposes to a pretty cop (Hunter).  But when the newlyweds learn they can’t conceive a baby, they decide to steal one from a couple who seem to have one to spare – since they just had quintuplets!  With its outrageous plot, fast-paced action and even some wild pyrotechnics, Raising Arizona is still a total blast of a movie!

“Starting from a point of delirious excess, the film leaps into dark and virtually uncharted territory to soar like a comet.” – Geoff Andrew, Time Out

“One of their funniest and most accessible films, it is also among their most introspective.” – Brian Eggert, Deep Focus Review
