Programming – A Visit from Mars scientist Dr. Larry S. Crumpler – and Club Officer Elections.

Dr. Larry S. Crumpler (Bubonicon 40 science speaker) returns to talk about his 2021 book, Missions to Mars: A New Era of Rover and Spacecraft Discovery on the Red Planet, and to give us an update on the Mars Rovers and what is new on the Red Planet as the United States begins planning for a manned visit…

♥ Plus we’ll have our club officer elections for moderator, alternator and executive secretary for 2023.  Not to mention choosing a “challenge” ingredient or theme for our December 2022 Holiday Party Cook-Off…

First up, Crumpler talks about his non-fiction book, and his work with the exploration of Mars.  “Human exploration of Mars is the most ambitious and exciting scientific goal of the twenty-first century.  Few people know as much about this fascinating planet as Dr. Larry Crumpler.  As one of the long-term planning leads for the Mars Exploration Rover Project, he helped control the daily communications between NASA and the rovers roaming the planet to gather scientific data.  Thanks to the Rover Project, we now know that the dry, red dust of the planet’s surface hides a wet, possibly living history, and that conditions were present for the evolution of complex, organic life.”

Dr. Crumpler is the Research Curator of Volcanology and Space Sciences at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, as well as an Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico.  He has participated in many NASA planetary missions over the years, including the Viking, Pathfinder, and Mars Exploration Rover missions, and Magellan synthetic aperture radar mapping missions to Venus. Currently he is a Science Team Member on the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission where he continues to play a leadership role in daily planning of Opportunity’s “natural history” exploration of the surface of Mars. He is also a Science Team Member on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE). He was also a collaborator on the Mars Odyssey orbiter Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS) instrument.

After Crumpler is done, we’ll have our annual Club Officer Elections!  And choose an ingredient or theme for the December cook-off/party.

Finally, the Halloween issue of ASFacts will be on hand.  Deadline for submissions is 7:00 pm Monday, October 10.

Masks are Encouraged Inside the Church!  Yes, COVID cases are still strong in parts of the United States…

Remember, no outside food is allowed at St. Andrew.  Please be discreet with any candy.  Water/soda bottles and lidded beverage cups are permitted (until we have a clean-up issue), and there is a water fountain in our meeting space.
Newcomers are welcome with a $1.00 contribution to help pay our rent…

DOORS OPEN AT 7:15 PM.  Please do not arrive before this time.  We have to set up the room ourselves, and straighten/clean-up at the end.  Enter through the North door (backside of church) as the courtyard is locked each day at 5:00 pm…
