Horror Double Feature Concludes

Horror Holiday Double Feature at the Guild Cinema

Wednesday-Thursday, October 31 & November 1, 6:00 & 8:00 pm.
All Seats $7.00, cash only.

Lady Frankenstein – 6:00 pm
Possession – 8:00 pm

Lady Frankenstein directed by Mel Welles – 1971 – 85m.

A low-budget twist on Mary Shelley’s classic horror story starring Joseph Cotton, Lady Frankenstein tantalizes and titillates with a wicked blend of sexy encounters and monster movie fun. Certainly the original Frankenstein contained a great deal of erotic overtones, but Lady Frankenstein and its star, the ravishing Sara Bay (aka Rosabla Neri), take these themes and express them overtly. Bay is the tawdry daughter of Baron Frankenstein. When the old man is killed by his first monstrous creation, his beautiful daughter continues his work – with slightly different aims: Bay creates a brawny and sinewy love machine for her personal pleasure! But when the original monster returns, Bay and her unnatural lover must fight for their lives! Lady Frankenstein is nonstop entertainment, pleasingly toeing the line between fright and flesh.

Possession directed by Andrzej Zutawski – 1981 – 123m.

In this controversial epic of obsessive love and sexual psychosis, Isabelle Adjani (Nosferatu The Vampyre, The Story of Adele H.) and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park) star as a married couple torn by emotional instability and carnal infidelity. As their madness grows, their world becomes a nightmare of savage murder…and climaxes in a monstrous manifestation of sexual evil. Written and directed by acclaimed international director Andrzej Zulawski and featuring shocking creature effects by Carlo Rambaldi (E.T., Alien), Possession is an experience like no other; part masterful art film, part bizarre horror thriller.

The Guild Cinema is located at 3405 Central Avenue NE, in the Nob Hill area.

Plus, there is club business to be discussed afterward – there’s a proposal to change the voting rules in the Bubonicon chair election. Should con-com be allowed? What about authors? And is it really necessary for an ASFS member to have attended a minimum of three club meetings in the previous 12 months?

THE THING finishes at Guild

John Carpenter’s The Thing at the Guild Cinema

Friday & Saturday, October 12-13, at 10:30 pm only

Directed by John Carpenter – 1982 – 109m.
All Seats $8.00 – Students with IDs $6.00. Cash only.
An ALIBI Midnight Madness presentation – Door Prizes courtesy of Stranger Factory.

Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense film – plus a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans.  It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don’t know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can’t tell who’s real and who’s a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat and Wilford Brimley.

Trek’s Kirk vs. Khan (Wrath) at Guild, Day 2

Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan at the Guild Cinema

Friday & Saturday, July 27-28, 10:30 pm only

Directed by Nicholas Meyer – 1982 – 112m.
All Seats $8.00 – Students with IDs $6.00. Cash only.
An Alibi Midnight Movie Madness Presentation.

THE SUMMER OF ’82 RETURNS TO US!

Inspired by the “Space Seed” episode of the original Trek TV series, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan reunites newly promoted Admiral Kirk with his nemesis from the earlier TV episode — the genetically superior Khan (Ricardo Montalban) — who is now seeking revenge upon Kirk for having been imprisoned on a desolated planet. Their battle ensues over control of the Genesis device, a top-secret Star Fleet project enabling entire planets to be transformed into life-supporting worlds, pioneered by the mother (Bibi Besch) of Kirk’s estranged and now-adult son. While Mr. Spock mentors the young Vulcan Lt. Saavik (then-newcomer Kirstie Alley), Kirk must battle Khan to the bitter end, through a climactic starship chase and an unexpected crisis that will cost the life of Kirk’s closest friend. This was the kind of character-based Trek that fans were waiting for, boosted by spectacular special effects, a great villain (thanks to Montalban’s splendidly melodramatic performance), and a deft combination of humor, excitement, and wondrous imagination. Director Nicholas Meyer (who would play a substantial role in the success of future Trek features) handles the film as a combination of Moby Dick, Shakespearean tragedy, World War II submarine thriller, and dazzling science fiction, setting the successful tone for the Trek films that followed.

Conan the Guild Cinema Barbarian, Day 2

Conan the Barbarian at the Guild Cinema

Friday & Saturday, July 13-14, 10:15 pm only

Directed by John Milius – 1982 – 129m.
All Seats $8.00 – Students with IDs $6.00. Cash only.
An Alibi Midnight Movie Madness Presentation, with prizes courtesy of Stranger Factory.

THE SUMMER OF ’82 RETURNS TO US!

This movie, which turned Arnold Schwarzenegger into a global superstar, is a prime example of a match made in heaven. Conan is the movie that macho maverick writer-director John Milius was born to make, and Arnold was genetically engineered for his role  – the muscle-bound, angst-ridden hero created in Robert E. Howard’s pulp novels. Oliver Stone contributed to Milius’ screenplay, and the production design by comic artist Ron Cobb represents a perfect cinematic realization of Howard’s fantasy world. To avenge the murder of his parents, Conan tracks down the evil Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) with the help of Queen Valeria (played by buff B-movie vixen Sandahl Bergman) and Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez).
