ABCs Reach End at Guild

The ABCs of Death at the Guild Cinema

Saturday, March 9, 10:30 pm only

Directed by 26 Individuals – 2012 – 123m.
An Alibi Midnight Movie Madness Presentation – All seats $8.00, cash only

Twenty-six directors. Twenty-six ways to die. The ABCs of Death is perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning 15 countries and featuring segments directed by more than two dozen of the world’s leading talents in contemporary genre film. Inspired by children’s educational books, the motion picture is comprised of 26 individual chapters; each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given free reign in choosing a word to create a story involving death. Provocative, shocking, funny and ultimately confrontational, The ABCs of Death is the definitive vision of modern horror diversity.

“Soars to such artistic heights, and such tasteless depths.” – Austin Chronicle

“Some of the best horror you’ll see this year.” – Bloody-Disgusting

Bubonicon 46 Special Guests Nomination Meeting

Nominations for Bubonicon 46 Special Guests (2014) will take place 7:00 pm Wednesday, March 13, in the Community Room of Page One Bookstore, 11018 Montgomery Blvd NE (southwest corner of Montgomery & Juan Tabo).
Mark your calendar if you’re interested. This meeting is open to everyone! You need not be a member of ASFS or a past attendee of Bubonicon to come and suggest possible guests. (However, a little research can be helpful in talking about why your nominee would be a great Bubonicon guest – titles of published work, where he/she lives, experiences at other cons.)

A Guideline To Remember: We cannot accept nominations for guests who charge appearance fees; or who live in England, Europe, Australia, Japan, etc. Sorry, our finances can’t cover those particular people.

If you cannot attend but have suggestions, please get your nominations to Kristen & Craig by the end of Sunday, March 10, at bubonicon@gmail.com. (However, you must be present to actually vote!)

Hobbit Consultant Lectures at UNM

Janet Brennan Croft, consultant on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, talks on “Tolkien’s Faërian Drama: Origins and Valedictions” on Thursday, February 14, at the University Honors Forum at the University of New Mexico.

In “On Fairy-stories,” Tolkien introduces the concept of Faërian drama: plays which the elves present to men, where the viewer feels he is “bodily inside its Secondary World” but instead is “in a dream that some other mind is weaving.” Faërian drama is a form of Elvish art one can almost but not quite grasp and understand, something the witness/participant will ponder and work through for the rest of his life. Croft will suggest that Tolkien may have been influenced in his development of the concept by the medieval dream-vision poems he worked with throughout his career. She will examine some examples of Faërian drama in Tolkien’s fiction and poetry, concentrating especially on his final story, Smith of Wootton Major, and the experiences Smith has in Faery.

Croft speaks 7:30 pm Thursday, February 14, in Room 21 (Ground Floor) of the Student Health Center Building on the UNM campus (behind Johnson Gym and the multi-floor parking garage). The lecture is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact UNM Hobbit Society at tolkien@unm.edu, call Dr. Leslie Donovan at 277-4313, or visit the UNM Hobbit Society website at www.unm.edu/~tolkien

David Peterson Talks on TV Languages

David Peterson, professional language creator on HBO’s Game of Thrones and SyFy’s Defiance, will talk about his TV work and discuss languages on Thursday, February 14.

In the space of one year, David Peterson went from being a “full-time” language creator to being a full-time language creator. After spending much of 2009-2011 happily working on Dothraki in spare moments and translating dialogue for HBO’s Game of Thrones when the need arose, in 2012 David found himself actually doing language creation as a full-time job, as opposed to a part-time job/part-time hobby. In this talk, David will share what it’s like to work as a full-time language creator, focusing on his work with Game of Thrones and SyFy’s Defiance (premiering in April). Along the way, he will discuss language, font design, travel, the importance of memory foam beds, and the state of the Dothraki language.

Peterson appears 6:30 pm Thursday, February 14, in Grand Pavilion V of the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque, 330 Tijeras Ave NW. The evening is presented by the Southwest/Texas Popular & American Culture Association.

The public is welcome. Tickets are $5.00 in advance, $8.00 at the door. For tickets, contact Ken Dvorak at 281-455-3289 or krdvorak@gmail.com.

Firefly’s Jane Espenson & Brad Bell Talk

The evening also will cover the show’s agenda, its transmedia narrative strategies and production, and its outreach potential. The evening will be moderated by Dr. Anne Jamison (University of Utah), with whom Espenson and Bell collaborated on an outreach project to benefit LGBTQ homeless youth in Salt Lake City. The discussion will also feature a screening of a half-hour story from the series, footage from the Salt Lake City event, and clips of students engaging Husbands in the critical theory classroom.

Espenson and Bell appear 8:00 pm Wednesday, February 13, in Grand Pavilion IV of the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque, 330 Tijeras Ave NW. The evening is presented by the Southwest/Texas Popular & American Culture Association.

The public is welcome. Tickets are $5.00 in advance, $8.00 at the door. For tickets, contact Ken Dvorak at 281-455-3289 or krdvorak@gmail.com.

“John Dies at the End” Finishes at Guild

John Dies at the End at the Guild Cinema

Thursday-Saturday, February 21-23,  7:00, 9:15 & 11:30 pm each day

Directed by Don Coscarelli – 2012 – 99m.
An Alibi Midnight Movie Madness Presentation – All seats $8.00, cash only
Door Prizes courtesy of Stranger Factory – and also by Bubonicon 45 on Saturday, February 23!

In John Dies at the End, it’s all about the Soy Sauce, a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. Users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John (Rob Mayes) and David (Chase Williamson), a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can’t.

Adapted from David Wong’s audacious trans-genre horror novel, John Dies at the End is written and directed by Don Coscarelli (Bubba Ho-Tep, Phantasm), and stars Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman and Paul Giamatti.

“A PUNK ROCK GHOSTBUSTERS BY WAY OF H.P. LOVECRAFT. Its best moments are exhilarating. The film has enough trippy and original ideas for ten movies.” Nathan Rabin, A.V. Club

“Filled with crazy, wild imagery that will delight genre fans, it sets a tone that falls somewhere between Ghostbusters and the work of William S. Burroughs. Fun, gross, playful and constantly finding ways to delight and startle.” Drew McWeeny, HITFIX

Princess Bride Finishes at Guild

The Princess Bride at the Guild Cinema

Saturday & Sunday, February 23-24, 11:00 am & 1:00 pm each day

Directed by Rob Reiner – 1987 – 98m.
Mom’s Matinee Brings Back A Favorite!  All Seats $5.00 – cash only.

A great visualization of this romantic fable!

Using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story. And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity… The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman’s very funny script, Reiner’s confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook.
