Zero Charisma Ends at Guild

Zero Charisma at the Guild Cinema

Saturday, November 30 – 10:30 pm only!

Directed by Katie Graham & Andrew Matthews – 2013 – 97m.
An Alibi Midnight Madness Presentation – All seats $8.00, cash only
Door Prizes courtesy of Stranger Factory and Bubonicon 46

As the strict Game Master of a fantasy role-playing game, Scott (Sam Eidson) leads his friends in a weekly quest through mysterious lands from the safety of his grandmother’s kitchen. But his mastery of his own domain starts to slip — along with everything else in his life — when neo-nerd hipster Miles (Garrett Graham) joins the game, winning over the group with his confident charm and dethroning Scott with an unexpected coup. Caught in delusions of grandeur, Scott must roll the dice and risk everything to expose Miles as the fraud he believes him to be. A darkly comedic fable of epic proportions, Zero Charisma is an ode to nerds from every realm.

“Almost certainly, the best nerd movie ever.” – Badass Digest

“Geniunely hilarious and painfully relatable.” – Collider

“The One True Nerd Movie… No other film nails the emotions of being a hardcore nerd like Zero Charisma.” – /Film

“Calvin & Hobbes” Documentary Ends at Guild

Dear Mr. Watterson – A New Documentary on Calvin & Hobbes at the Guild Cinema
* Encore Presentation – Special Thanks to 7000 BC for assistance in promoting these special screenings *

Monday, November 25 – 4:30 & 8:30 pm

Directed by Joel Allen Schroeder – 2013 – 89m.

Calvin & Hobbes dominated the Sunday comics in thousands of newspapers for over 10 years, having a profound effect on millions of readers across the globe.  When the strip’s creator, Bill Watterson, retired the strip on New Year’s Eve in 1995, devoted readers everywhere felt the void left by the departure of Calvin, Hobbes and Watterson’s other cast of characters, and many fans would never find a satisfactory replacement. It has now been more than a decade since the end of the Calvin & Hobbes era.  Bill Watterson has kept an extremely low profile during this time, living a very private life outside of Cleveland, Ohio.  Despite his quiet lifestyle, Mr. Watterson is remembered and appreciated daily by fans who still enjoy his amazing collection of work.Mr. Watterson has inspired and influenced millions of people through Calvin & Hobbes.  Newspaper readership and book sales can be tracked and recorded, but the human impact he has had and the value of his art are perhaps impossible to measure. This film is not a quest to find Bill Watterson, or to invade his privacy.  It is an exploration to discover why his ‘simple’ comic strip made such an impact on so many readers in the 80s and 90s, and why it still means so much to us today.

“Divine” Documentary at Guild

I Am Divine at the Guild Cinema

Friday-Sunday, November 8-10 – 4:30 & 6:30 pm daily

Directed by Jeffrey Schwarz – 2013 – 85m.

“Divine was my close friend and fearless muse. Who else could convincingly turn from teenage delinquent to mugger, prostitute, unwed mother, child abuser, fashion model, nightclub entertainer, murderess, and jailbird? All in the same movie? That’s why I am giving my full blessing to a new documentary feature film, I Am Divine, to be directed by award-winning filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz.”  — John Waters

I Am Divine is a definitive biographical portrait of Harris Glenn Milstead, a.k.a. Divine, and honors him in just the way he always craved — as a serious artist and immortal star. Divine’s entire story is told, from his early days as a misfit youth in Baltimore through his rise to infamy as a cult superstar. Like the characters he portrayed in numerous films, Divine was the ultimate outsider.

He transformed himself from a bullied schoolyard fat kid to a larger-than-life personality and underdog royalty as his alter-ego Divine. Divine stood up for millions of gay men and women, female impersonators, punk rockers, the ample figured, and countless other socially ostracized people. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality and revolutionized pop culture.

As outrageous and fun as its subject, I Am Divine combines movie clips, rare home movies and photos, television appearances and live performance footage with brand new interviews with John Waters, Ricki Lake, Mink Stole, Tab Hunter, Holly Woodlawn, Michael Musto, Bruce Vilanch, mother Frances Milstead (who provided her final interview just months before she passed away), and many more of Divine’s family, friends, colleagues, and devotees.

“5 Stars! “…laugh-out-loud funny and eminently quotable.”  -Orlando Weekly

“The Bottom Line: Entertaining doc is sweeter than expected and will be an eye-opener for young fans.” – The Hollywood Reporter

Amusement Park “Escape” Ends at Guild

Escape From Tomorrow at the Guild Cinema

Sunday, November 10 – 8:30 pm only!

Directed by Randy Moore – 2013 – 104m.

The most provocative film from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, Escape From Tomorrow should not exist, and yet it does. Like nothing you’ve ever seen, Randy Moore’s directorial debut is a bold and ingenious trip into the happiest place on earth.
An epic battle begins when a middle-aged American husband and father of two learns that he has lost his job. Keeping the news from his nagging wife and wound-up children, he packs up the family and embarks on a full day of park hopping amid enchanted castles and fairytale princesses. Soon, the manufactured mirth of the fantasy land around him begins to haunt his subconscious. An idyllic family vacation quickly unravels into a surrealist nightmare of paranoid visions, bizarre encounters, and an obsessive pursuit of a pair of sexy teenage Parisians.
Chillingly shot in black and white, Escape From Tomorrow dissects the mythology of artificial perfection while subversively attacking our culture’s obsession with mass entertainment.” – Film Buff

“One of the most daring motion pictures I’ve encountered in a very, very long time. … An emotionally walloping experience that, for all its flaws, I wouldn’t have missed for the world.” – William Bibbiani, CraveOnline

” … has an otherworldly atmosphere that both hooks and engages.” – Damon Wise, Guardian [UK]

Brian Jay Jones’ “Jim Henson” signing

As part of that visit, he will be at Page One Bookstore October 26 to talk about and sign Jim Henson: The Biography!

Jones was allowed to do research in the Muppet archives and talked to many of Henson’s friends and colleagues. This extraordinary biography—written with the generous cooperation of the Henson family—covers the full arc of Henson’s all-too-brief life: from his childhood in Leland, Mississippi, through the years of burgeoning fame in America, to the decade of international celebrity that preceded his untimely death at age 53.

Come join Jones 2:30 pm Saturday, October 26, at Page One Bookstore, 11018 Montgomery Blvd NE (southwest corner of Montgomery & Juan Tabo).

For more information, check out www.page1book.com…

“I’m a rabid Jim Henson fan—his brilliant ideas spawned shows that entertained and educated millions, myself included. Jim Henson vibrantly delves into the magnificent man and his Muppet methods. It’s an absolute must read!”—Neil Patrick Harris

“I worked with Jim for more than 30 years. He was one of my closest friends. And yet I found out things about him in Jim Henson that were new to me. Brian Jay Jones has captured the layers of Jim’s genius and humanity, as well as the flaws that made Jim, like all of us, so delightfully imperfect. Jim needed this book to be written. I thank Brian for giving Jim life again. This book has captured the spirit of Jim Henson.”—Frank Oz
