Muppets Finish at Guild

Muppets From Space at the Guild Cinema

Ends Sunday, Jan 30, 11:00 am & 1:00 pm

Dir. Tim Hill – 1999 – 82m – All Seats $5

The film that answers the immortal question: what species is Gonzo?!

One of the better Muppet features in recent years, MUPPETS FROM SPACE begins with Gonzo wondering where he came from and then promptly receiving messages from his alien brethren. Though the rest of the Muppet clan believe Gonzo insane, especially after he announces his revelation on Mrs. Piggy’s talk show, he arouses the interest of an idiotic government official, which leads to his imprisonment. Kermit reluctantly realizes Gonzo is in trouble and brings his fellow Muppets to try and help him escape. This one features a soundtrack made up of mostly 70s funk and introduces a new Muppet – Pepe the prawn, who gets quite a few laughs here.

Zenith ends at the Guild

Zenith at the Guild Cinema

Ends Sunday, Jan 29, 9:15 only!

Dir. Vladan Nikolic – 2010 – 93m.  A LOST OBJECT FROM THE FUTURE – THE FILM THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO SEE – THE UNDERGROUND CULT MOVIE SENSATION

ZENITH is a retro-futuristic steam-punk thriller, about two men in two time periods, whose search for the same grand conspiracy leads them to question their own humanity.

Starting from a fictional recreation of Stanley Milgram’s Obedience to Authority experiment, Zenith plunges into exploring multifaceted dimensions of the human experience. The film follows two parallel stories – of father and son – now, and 40 years into the future. Searching for the same elusive conspiracy, both father and son find no answers; instead, their journeys unravel their lives and force them to look deep and hard at themselves and their surroundings. In the end, they are both confronted with the same Faustian bargain – but each one chooses a very different path.

“a brooding science-fiction trip…Nikolic’s lust for paranoid desperation is powerful, and his way with actors is stunningly graceful.” – Michael Atkinson, Village Voice

“Imaginative sci-fi thriller…conceptual imagination…a talent to watch!” – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter

Our 6th Annual Dessert Cook-Off  +  Short Holiday-Oriented Silly SF Films.
+ The challenge ingredient this year (as chosen at the October ASFS meeting) is “ginger.” Please bring enough of your dish (and we’re happy stretching the definition of dessert) for 16-32 people to sample, plus serving utensils. Please remember that we need to let attendees know of ingredients in the major food allergy groups – peanuts, wheat and other glutens, milk, soy, corn, sugar, onions, etc.
We will provide plates, plasticware and napkins – and will try to remember bowls, too.
As much as possible, there will be prizes!
+ Plus, we’ll screen various short films about the winter holidays from the various vaults of our members! These will tend to be comedies and silly bits.
+ Finally, the annual December issue of SithFacts will be available. Submissions are needed by Sunday, December 5 (email Craig C.).

Fritz Lang – 1927 – 148m – Germany – In German with English Subtitles

In July 2008, it was announced that an essentially complete copy of Fritz Lang’s visionary masterpiece METROPOLIS had been found at the Buenos Aires Museo del Cine in Argentina.  It included not merely a few additional snippets, but 25 minutes of scenes (one-fifth of the complete running time) considered lost for 80 years.  From conception to completion, the restoration took nearly a full year and cost almost $1 million to complete.  This digitally restored footage and Gottfried Huppertz’s magnificent original score provide the closest version to the director’s original vision since its premiere in 1927.

In the future, Metropolis is a bustling city-state where two groups make up the population. The thinkers live above ground and enjoy the fruits of life, while the workers live underground creating the fruits that the thinkers enjoy. When Freder Fredersen, the son of the city leader, journeys underground with Maria, advocate for the workers, he witnesses first hand the horrors that the workers live in. Can he and Maria bring the parties together or will the thinkers further dominate the underground workforce?

The Guild Cinemas is located at 3405 Central Ave NE in the Nob Hill area (across the street from Flying Star Cafe and Starbucks).
