WORLD ON A WIRE – Guild

World on a Wire at the Guild Cinema

Monday-Friday, November 7-11, 3:00 & 7:00 pm

Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder – 1973 – 212m (in German with English subtitles).
PART OF THE GUILD’S EIGHT DAYS OF SCI-FI SOLSTICE !!

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR FRIENDS AT BUBONICON 44 !!

A dystopic science-fiction epic, World on a Wire is German-wunderkind Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s gloriously cracked, boundlessly inventive take on future paranoia. With dashes of Kubrick, Vonnegut, and Dick, but a flavor entirely his own, Fassbinder tells the noir-spiked tale of reluctant action hero Fred Stiller (Klaus Lowitsch), a cybernetics engineer who uncovers a massive corporate and governmental conspiracy. At risk? Our entire (virtual) reality as we know it. This long unseen three-and-a-half-hour labyrinth is a satiric and surreal look at the weird world of tomorrow from one of cinema’s kinkiest geniuses.

“A textbook example of a film that was ahead of its time … a movie that anticipates Blade Runner in its meditation on artificial and human intelligence and The Matrix in its conception of reality as a computer-generated illusion.” – Dennis Lim, The New York Times

“FIVE STARS! The discovery of the season.” – Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York

MAN WHO FELL at Guild Cinema

The Man Who Fell To Earth at the Guild Cinema

Saturday & Sunday, November 5-6, 4:15 & 7:00 pm

Directed by Nicholas Roeg – 1976 – 140m.
PART OF THE GUILD’S EIGHT DAYS OF SCI-FI SOLSTICE !!

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR FRIENDS AT BUBONICON 44 !!

A stimulating, hypnotic and fascinating adaptation of the science fiction novel by Walter Tevis by visionary director/cinematographer Nicholas Roeg!  Look for scenes shot right in downtown Albuquerque, at White Sands and several other various New Mexico locations!

David Bowie plays the alien of the title, who arrives on Earth with hopes of finding a way to save his own planet from turning into an arid wasteland. He funds this effort by capitalizing on several highly lucrative inventions, and in so doing becomes the powerful leader of an international corporate conglomerate. But his success has negative consequences as well–his contact with Earth has a disintegrating effect that sends him into a tailspin of disorientation and metaphysical despair. The sexual attention of a cheerful young woman (Candy Clark) doesn’t do much to change his outlook, and his introduction to liquor proves even more devastating, until, finally, it looks as though his visit to Earth may be a permanent one.

“The most intellectually provocative genre film of the 1970s.” – Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York

Our 7th Annual Dessert Cook-Off  +  Short Holiday-Oriented Silly SF Films.
+ The challenge ingredient this year (as chosen at the October ASFS meeting) is “mint.” Please bring enough of your dish (and we’re happy stretching the definition of dessert) for 18-35 people to sample, plus serving utensils. Please remember that we need to let attendees know of ingredients in the major food allergy groups – peanuts, wheat and other glutens, milk, soy, corn, sugar, onions, etc.
We will provide plates, plasticware and napkins – and will try to remember bowls, too.
As much as possible, there will be prizes!
+ Plus, we’ll screen various short films about the winter holidays from the various vaults of our members! These will tend to be comedies and silly bits.
+ Finally, the annual December issue of SithFacts will be available. Submissions are needed by Sunday, December 4 (email Craig C.).

Alcoholic beverages are not allowed! Water/soda bottles and lidded beverage cups are permitted (until we have a clean-up issue), and there is a water fountain in our meeting space.
Newcomers are welcome with a $1.00 contribution to help pay our rent…

DOORS OPEN AT 7:15 PM. Please do not arrive before this time. We have to set up the room ourselves, and straighten/clean-up at the end.
