An absolute classic (“super shocker of the century!”) of its era, this 1959 William Castle directed / Vincent Price featured spooker delivers the goods!  A millionaire offers ten thousand dollars to five people if they agree to stay overnight in a large, spooky, rented house – and you can bet the five guests are in for a long, bumpy night.   Also starring Carol Ohmart, Richard Long, Alan Marshal, Carolyn Craig, Elisha Cook, and Julie Mitchum.

The film is perhaps best known for a promotional gimmick used in the film’s original theatrical release called “Emergo.”  In some theaters that showed the film, exhibitors rigged an elaborate pulley system near the theater screen which allowed a plastic skeleton to be flown over the audience during a corresponding scene late in the film!

“A classic in its own right, exhibiting the ability for horror to remain timeless.” – Stephanie Archer, Film Inquiry

“Unlike the majority of recent horror films which have depended on mutilations or monsters for chills, reverts to the fundamental of the ghost story — fear of the unknown.” – George Bourke, Miami Herald

“If one had to pick the best of the campy horror films that made [Castle’s] reputation, this 1958 feature would probably be it.”  Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

“There is some good humor in the dialog which not only pays off well against the ghostly elements, but provides a release for laughter so it does not explode in the suspense sequences.” – Variety
