The imaginative, hilarious comedy, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, stars happy-go-lucky Pee-Wee Herman (aka comedian Paul Reubens). Pee-Wee Herman is not an average little boy–he exists in a grown-up body, has a penchant for 1950s Retro memorabilia, and lives in a zany, make-believe world. He is on a mission to find his beloved red bicycle, which has been stolen, and on the way Pee-Wee has a series of cartoon-like adventures. When a fortune teller instructs Pee-Wee to look for his bike in the basement of the Alamo, he takes her advice. Embarking on a kind of Hero’s Journey, Pee-Wee comes into contact with characters even crazier than he is. One of the more memorable scenes comes after he starts up a touching friendship with a romantic waitress (Diane Salinger) and is chased by her boyfriend (Jon Harris) around a park of giant dinosaur models until he finds himself in an unfriendly biker bar where, in order to avoid being killed, he performs an impromptu dance to the old surfer tune “Tequila.” With imaginative sets and dream sequences that use claymation and pixilated models, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure is a side-splitting comedy that references almost every Hollywood genre, especially the perennial favorite Road Movie.

“Burton’s first feature revels in the weird, the unpredictable, the infantile and the absurd. A dazzling debut.” – Empire Magazine

“Pee-Wee Herman comes over as a delightful original.” – Brian Case, Time Out

“Adventure is a well-produced showcase that sets [Pee-Wee Herman] firmly in line with classic clowns from Chaplin through Jerry Lewis.” – Steve Warren, Bay Area Reporter

“Tim Burton’s first (and best) movie…” – David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews

Big Top Pee-Wee – directed by Randal Kleiser – 1988 – 86m – No Matinees.   Part of the Guild’s “New Year’s with Pee-Wee Double Feature” Celebration!

Pee-Wee Herman (Paul Reubens) runs away to the circus — or, rather, the circus runs away to him — in director Randal Kleiser’s follow-up to Tim Burton’s “Pee-Wee” film.  More a companion piece than a true sequel, Big Top Pee-Wee finds our hero as a farmer with a talking pig (voiced by Wayne White) and a slightly insufferable fiancee (Penelope Ann Miller); his simple yet somewhat boring life gets a sudden jolt of excitement when an entire traveling circus plops onto his land, courtesy of a tornado. Soon, Pee-Wee has circus fever, inspiring the ringmaster (Kris Kristofferson) to produce a new act that gives homage to the American farmer … and falling for the gorgeous trapeze artist (Valeria Golino).  Big Top Pee-Wee has elements that are even more absurdist than anything in that of its predecessor.  The film debut of Benicio Del Toro, who appears as Duke the Dog-Faced Boy.

“A yeowling comedy. Look out for those sight gags.” – Cole Smithey, ColeSmithey.com

“Benefits substantially from Reubens’ winning work as the always-appealing Pee-Wee Herman…” – David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews
