Welcome to the Bubonicon 49 Costume Contest Information and Rules Page

Welcome to Bubonicon 49’s Costume Contest.  Every year, the Costume Contest is one of the most popular events at Bubonicon, and we are sure that this year’s event will be no exception.

Be sure to read the rules/guidelines below for important contestant information. Failure to follow the rules may result in disqualification or removal.

If you have any questions, e-mail the Costume Contest Coordinator.  There will also be an information session on Saturday morning at 10:00 am in the Carlsbad Room where you can register, give us your background sound/music, and have any questions answered.

Registration for the Bubonicon 49 Costume Contest is 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Saturday, August 26th.
If you have not turned in your registration by 5:00 pm Saturday, you will not be allowed in the Costume Contest.

Entry forms can be found either as a pdf (interactive and non-interactive versions) on this webpage or at Bubonicon’s Registration desk at the convention.

Completed forms must be turned in to the Costume Contest box at the Bubonicon Registration desk at the convention on Saturday, August 26.  DO NOT email them. We will lose it!

To register, each contestant (or one representative for a group presentation) will need to fill out one Entry Form. Submit only one form per group presentation.  All group members MUST have weekend or Saturday passes to Bubonicon 49 in order to participate.

Contestants aged 13 and under are welcome to compete, but they must have a parent or legal guardian present at registration when they register to sign their consent, and must be accompanied by one legal guardian or relative who is aged 18+ for the entirety of the costume contest.

1. Presentations are limited to a maximum of 60 seconds.  If your presentation runs longer, you will be invited off stage by the Emcee.  If you need more time for your presentation, you must get approval from the Costume Contest Coordinator before 7:00 pm on Saturday, August 26.

2. Entries must check in prior to the costume contest at the Green Room (Carlsbad Room).  The Green Room will be available at starting at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.  Contestants must check in no later than 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Any entry that has not checked in by the required time will be scratched from the contest. The Costume Contest will start at 8:00 pm. You may choose to leave your belongings in the Green Room or in reserved seating in the main room, but neither place will be guaranteed secure. Please plan accordingly. The convention will not be held responsible for missing items.

3. Volunteers will be present to assist contestants up and down the stairs to the stage.  We are also hoping to have volunteers in the Green Room to help with last-minute issues.

4. No costume is NO COSTUME.  Bubonicon is a family-friendly environment and the costume contest is “rated” PG.  All costumes must be tasteful and the use of foul language is prohibited. The judgment of what is acceptable is the sole discretion of the Costume Contest Coordinator and Staff.

5. Do not leave a mess on the stage or other on other contestants.  This refers to things like glitter, rose petals, confetti, etc that will require lengthy clean-up.  If a prop is to be left on stage as a part of the presentation, let the staff know AHEAD of time so they will be prepared to quickly get it off stage.

6. Weapons used in the Costume Contest must follow the official policies of Bubonicon 49 (Peace bonded, no sharp blades).  All weapons will be made available to Costume Contest Staff for inspection before the contest. No live weapons may be drawn on stage!

7. If you hear the Emcee or Costume Contest Staff member shout “Stop,” you should stop whatever you are doing immediately — you are in imminent danger of falling off the stage.

8. The Emcee will read the name of the entry, names of the entrant(s), and names of the people who made the costumes.  Any additional text which you would like the Emcee to read must be written legibly/typed on the entry form or another piece of paper.  If the Emcee cannot read your writing, he will make something up.

9. There will be no live microphone available to contestants.

We are able to play pre-recorded sound/dialogue for presentations in the costume contest!  All sound must be pre-edited to a maximum of 60 seconds.  Anything longer will not be used unless cleared with the Costume Coordinator ahead of time.  Sound files can be turned in with the Registration Form at Bubonicon’s registration desk or at the Information session on Saturday morning on CD/DVD for download onto our computer.  The file must the only track on the disk and have your name written on it. (We will not be guaranteeing the return of CD/DVDs.) We will not play the file direct from your i-Pod, Smart Phone or MP3 Player.   We are not responsible for lack of sound due to technical “glitches.”

We will have a short selection of pre-edited pieces available you can choose from at the convention, but it is not guaranteed.  To choose one of these pieces, you must come to the Information/Help session 10:00 am Saturday in the Carlsbad Room.

10. Judges’ Bribes are a time-honored tradition at Bubonicon’s Costume Contest (and highly encouraged by the judges).

11. Photography is allowed during the Costume Contest, but do not stop and pose for photography after your presentation as this will slow down the entire contest.  The green room will be available for photography at intermission and afterward (until at least 11:00 pm).

12. Presentations should be a delightful surprise for the audience and judges.  However, do not surprise the Bubonicon Costume Contest Staff or Emcee.  Let them know in advance about anything that may catch them off guard.

Your presentation on stage is the only opportunity you will have to show off your costume(s) to the judges and audience.  Be “in character,” be confident and have fun!  The judges and audience are all rooting for you.  If you are having trouble with your presentation, remember that usually, “short is good, funny is better, short and funny is best.”

One first place “Best of Show” will be awarded.  There also will be an award for “Best of Theme: Back In Time.” Other awards will be awarded at the discretion of the judges.  The decision of the judges is final.
